Experience the exhilarating Sardine Run, spending time out at sea interacting with dolphins, whales, seals, penguins, sharks and birds chasing the Biggest Shoal on earth!
During the months from April to July, the cooler Benguela current moves up towards the east coast of South Africa resulting in the migration of millions of Sardines. This provides an abundant food source attracting game, fish, sea birds, whales, dolphins and sharks…
The days are spent moving up and down the coastline in search of “bait balls”. Sightings of whales and hundreds of dolphins are common.
The Sardine Run is a natural phenomenon which is caused by the movement of currents and certain weather patterns, therefore it cannot be guaranteed to see sardines, however regular close up encounters with sharks, dolphins, whales and sea birds guarantees this to be a lifetime experience.
Diving and Snorkeling: Snorkeling is ideal, as the sardine bait balls often move quite fast and with snorkel gear it is easy to gain quick entry and exit on the boat. This also allows the boat to keep up with the action. In the event that there is a large sardine bait ball it is ideal to hop in with scuba to move down below and observe the predators.
Arrive and transfer to the Port St Johns. Check in for 6 nights accommodation at the luxury Ntaba Lodge and Spa, including breakfast daily.
The lodge is ideally situated on the Umzimvubu River. Meet up in the early evening for a full expedition briefing and to meet the crew.
